Dr. Markus Rathey

Dr. Markus Rathey is professor at the Yale School of Music and Yale Institute of Sacred Music. He joined the Yale faculty in 2003 after teaching at the University of Mainz and the University of Leipzig. He also was a research fellow at the Bach-Archiv Leipzig.

His research interests are music of the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries, Johann Sebastian Bach, and the relationship between music, religion, and politics during the Enlightenment. Professor Rathey is president of the American Bach Society and past president of the Forum on Music and Christian Scholarship.

In 2016, he published two books on Bach: Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio: Music, Theology, Culture (Oxford University Press) and Bach’s Major Vocal Works: Music, Drama, Liturgy (Yale University Press).
